Q: How does my athlete join?
A: Incoming freshmen are encouraged to participate in our summer aquatics program. This serves as their tryout, and the time they spend here will help the coaching staff determine the appropriate team for your athlete. Current students should contact Coach Dorrego at sdorrego@fjuhsd.org.
Q: How much time will my athlete spend on this activity?
A: Our aquatics teams operate throughout the entire school year. The busiest times of the year will be during your athlete’s season. CIF sports are categorized into any of the three following seasons: fall, winter, or spring. Each season represents about three months. Boys Water Polo is a fall sport, Girls Water Polo is a winter sport, and Swim & Dive is a spring sport. All of our water polo players are expected to join the swim team in the spring. This will determine whether water polo players are allowed back on the team next season. An athlete’s time commitment will change depending on if their sport is in season or not.
Q: What are the approximate costs for participating in aquatics?
A: We request a season contribution of $250 for Boys/Girls Water Polo and $150 for Swim/Dive. Team gear varies in price. Members of the aquatics program are also encouraged to purchase team shirts to wear on game days. Team gear and game-day shirts will be available for purchase multiple times throughout the year. Athletes must provide their own personal practice equipment (goggles, towels, swim caps, etc.).
Q: Are parents expected to participate?
A: Parent participation is not required, but it is appreciated. Throughout the school year, parent help will be needed to operate our snack shack and help plan and execute our banquets.
Q: How can I stay informed about what is going on in the program?
A: The weekly schedule will be posted periodically on this website. Checking your athlete’s Google Classroom page is also a great way to catch up on what is going on. There is also a team Remind that has been created and is operated by Coach Dorrego. This app allows him to send out updates to parents instantly. To be part of this Remind app, email Coach Dorrego at sdorrego@fjuhsd.org. In the email, tell him the following: your athlete’s name and which program(s) you would like to stay informed about (boys water polo, girls water polo, or swim and dive). If you are a water polo parent, it is recommended to be part of both the water polo and swim and dive groups. If you download the app, you can choose how you receive the information (via text, email, or in-app push notifications).
